Senior turns life experiences into something rewarding

Springfield, Illinois author Linda Sommer Farley started her writing career in earnest when she was 57. Now, at age 61, she urges everyone to follow their dreams no matter what their age.
“The most rewarding moments are when I receive calls from individuals who have read my book and tell me how much it has helped them. Never feel that you are too old to accomplish something that is important to you. Be true to yourself and fulfill your dreams,” she says.
Farley, born on the Fourth of July, grew up in a large family that had fallen on hard economic times.
The sixth child of eight, she raised her siblings while her mother dealt with a gambling addiction and neglected the family. An abusive grandfather added to the trauma of her childhood.
Her novel, “A Childhood Taken Away by a Mother and Grandfather,” was published by Publish America in 2005.
The book was the February 2006 Featured Book at WomensSelfEsteem.com.
A review of the book by the Web site notes: “Linda Sommer Farley’s story captured my interest mostly because of her strength as she continued to move forward in her life.
“She shows women that it is possible to take control of every situation and make choices toward a better life. ‘A Childhood Taken Away’ is written with intelligence and very good articulation. Inspirational as well as motivational.”
Shortly after the book was featured on the Web site, she received a card from Laura Bush. The card included a personal note from the first lady.
During the years prior to the book being published, Sommer said she dealt with her memories by making a positive impact on society through volunteering.
She received a WICS Volunteer 20 award from the station, was the 1997 volunteer of the year for outstanding service and leadership on behalf of the Central Illinois Food Bank and volunteered for eight years at St. Patrick’s School.
Farley also helped at the St. Martins de Porres Center for 12 years.
The birth of a physically handicapped grandchild in 1999 led her to design sets of fluffy pillows that envelop and provide comfort to children.
She received a patent in 2001 for her designs.
Farley’s business related to the pillows is called Elissa’s Happy Cloud Pillows Inc. in honor of her now-deceased grandchild.
“She passed away in 2003 just two weeks before her 4th birthday,” Farley says.
“She loved her pillows, and they brought her the crucial comfort that she truly needed and deserved. She was on life support 24 hours a day, but she always smiled.”
Farley says she stays busy with her business and continues to write about her life experiences.
