Tips for reducing your chances of being a Victim of Sexual Assault.

A friend of Mine who is a member of this site suggested I start posting my Crime Prevention tips on Saving Cinderella. I am very happy she suggested this location as it has some wonderful information pertatining to a subject that needs massive attention.

I will be posting on a regular basis. Please send me a comment if you wish. Thank you for allowing me to assist.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO REDUCE YOUR CHANCES of BEING A VICTIM OF SEXUAL ASSAULT?

· Always be aware of your surroundings.

· Stay in well-lit areas as much as possible.

· Walk confidently, directly, at a steady pace. A rapist looks for someone who appears vulnerable.

· Walk on the side of the street facing traffic.

· Walk close to the curb. Avoid doorways, bushes and alleys where rapists can hide.

· If you think you are being followed, walk quickly to areas where there are people and lights. If a car appears to be following you, turn and walk in the opposite direction or walk on the other side of the street.

· Be careful when people stop you for directions or money. Always reply from a distance and never get too close to the car.

· If you are in trouble or feel you are in danger, don't be afraid to attract help any way you can. Scream, yell or run away to safety.

· Always lock your car. Keep your car locked when you are away from it to keep someone from hiding and waiting inside.

· When you are inside the car, lock the doors for safety.

· Look inside and around your car before you get in.

· Be aware of other people in parking areas, especially those close to your vehicle.

· If you think you are being followed, drive to a public place or a police station to get help.

· If your car breaks down, open the hood or attach a white cloth to the antenna. If someone stops to help, stay inside your locked vehicle and ask them to call the police.

· If you choose to carry any type of weapon for self-protection, give careful consideration to your ability and willingness to use it. Remember there is always the chance that it could be taken away and used

Very good tips... I had heard about the walking confidently with your head up as it makes you look stronger and not weak. The other tip that I heard that I follow is if you are walking alone at night in a remote area for whatever ungodly reason then put the keys between your fingers so the keys dont show but they are sticking out. This way if you are attacked even from behind you can have a weapon of some sort to help fight off your attacker. I have used this for a long time and it just goes that little extra step to making you a little safer. Great post! Thanks,

You are very welcome.

Do you think I should post general safety Items regarding personal safety, child saefty, home protection. They are not necessarily related to abusive relationships, but they are very useful?

Thanks again,
Mike

Add: Take a course in self-defense. It can build self-esteem and boost your chances of survival if attack.

Thanks, Mike.

Staying sober is a great idea, too. I am always amazed how many of the teenagers we see in our Keller Center for Violence and Intervention do not remember the rape they have suffered. Of course, some are victims of "date rape" drugs slipped to them, but by and large most of them have just imbibed too much alcohol.
